X-CELL visits STRABAG’s Learning and Development team

How can we create e-learning courses that not only impart knowledge but also have a real impact? This was precisely the question addressed in a joint e-learning workshop with STRABAG’s Learning & Development – Digital Learning team in Cologne.

Insights

X-CELL and STRABAG have enjoyed a successful partnership in the field of digital learning for many years. This has resulted in numerous e-learning courses for large, international audiences – including training programmes for around 40,000 employees in 18 languages. The fact that the focus is not only on reach but also on quality is demonstrated by the company’s win of the eLearning Award 2025.

The focus has now shifted to another important step: a joint discussion on how pedagogical expertise can be integrated even more effectively into the development of in-house training programmes.

From project knowledge to a shared understanding of quality

During the workshop, X-CELL shared its experience in the design and development of effective e-learning courses: from target audience analysis and the formulation of specific learning objectives through to the structuring of content, engaging elements, copywriting and visual design.

One aim was to establish a shared understanding of quality: what makes a digital training course clear, consistent and effective for learning? How can content be presented in a way that suits the target audience, motivates them and facilitates the transfer of knowledge into everyday working life?

Another key focus of the workshop was on how internal authors at STRABAG can be supported even more effectively in future.

Providing targeted support to authors

In large organisations such as STRABAG, many training courses are developed within specialist departments – where the expert knowledge lies. These authors rarely have a background in media education. This makes clear guidelines, practical resources and a common quality framework all the more important.

Consequently, specific resources have been developed collaboratively to provide guidance and further standardise the quality of internally produced training programmes. These include, amongst other things, an evaluation form for internal e-learning courses, which can be used to review and further develop training programmes based on didactic, structural and design criteria.

In addition, the basic structure for a new e-learning course has been created, which will in future teach authors at STRABAG the fundamentals of instructional design. It is intended to help plan training courses in a targeted manner right from the start: What learning objectives should be achieved? What content is truly relevant? How can a training course get off to a motivating start? Where is interaction, a change of media or transfer tasks required?

Consistency, direction and lasting impact

Consistency is a key factor for success, particularly when addressing a large and international audience. Uniform teaching standards ensure that learning resources remain recognisable, understandable and effective – regardless of the subject area in which they are developed.

The workshop demonstrated that quality in digital learning does not happen by chance. It is the result of clear objectives, thorough preparation, appropriate methods and a shared understanding of what learners really need.

We look forward to continuing to support STRABAG on this journey – with advice, experience gained from numerous e-learning projects and a shared commitment to making digital learning just that little bit better every time.
